UGANDAN President Yoweri Museveni has thanked Donald Trump for talking to Africans “frankly,” just days after the US president sparked a storm of criticism for describing African nations as “sh*thole countries.”
The Ugandan was the first African leader to not openly condemn the hardline Republican’s ‘racist’ comment, which triggered unprecedented international outrage.
Mr Museveni said: “America has got one of the best presidents ever… I love Trump because he talks to Africans frankly.”
The Ugandan, who was speaking to lawmakers at the opening of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, added: “I do not know whether [Mr. Trump] was quoted correctly, but I like him because he addresses Africa’s weaknesses with frankness.”
African leaders labelled Mr. Trump a racist earlier this month after he allegedly described some immigrants as coming from “sh*thole countries” during an immigration meeting, with sources saying he’d questioned why the United States would want to let them into the country.
Mr Trump later denied using the derogatory phrase, saying he had merely used “tough” language, although many officials present at the White House meeting have confirmed that “sh*thole” was the exact word used.
